Letter - Indecency Legislation |
Dear
Senator,
It has come to my attention that S. 2056, a bill that
would give the FCC the authority to impose significant
fines and revoke licenses of broadcasters who violate
decency law, has been stalled on the floor of the Senate.
I am upset that this important legislation would be
allowed to languish. I am writing to ask you to vote
on and for S. 2056 immediately.
The
Super Bowl drew 140 million American viewers. Only 40
million Americans watch network television on a regular
basis. It was the 100 million Americans who were shocked
by what they saw and it is 100 million Americans who
were outraged and demanded change. I am one of those
Americans. Please don't sell us out to the powerful
broadcast lobby—a lobby who represents a cartel
that profits on sex, violence, and profanity.
The law of the land states that network broadcasters
do not have the right to air sexually indecent and profane
material over the publicly-owned airwaves. Nevertheless,
day and night we are bombarded by graphic sex, violence,
and profanity on TV and radio. This flood of indecency
has a corrosive effect on our youth, families, and society
as a whole. Please give the FCC the power to impose
significant fines and/or revoke station licenses of
broadcasters who break the law. My friends, neighbors,
and I are counting on your support.
Sincerely,
|
